Zamnotes on Bemba (the language I'm learning)
-Bantu languages like Bemba were passed down orally; This is helpful as it is all written phonetically. Thank God.
-Mwashibukeni Mukwai=Good Morning!
-Muli Shani=How are you?
-Bemba doesn't contain the letter 'R,' which causes the locals to use 'L' in place of 'R' even when speaking English. So "Eric" becomes "Elic." And "Rice" becomes "Lice."
-"Ba" precees every adult name, as a sign of respect. I'm "Ba Neddie" because they don't like words ending in consonants.
-You can sometimes create [corrupt] a Bemba noun from an English noun by adding the prefix "ama-." Ex: Amaboots. We have our own version: we add "Zam" before a word and it immediately becomes Zambian. For instance: Zambeef (in all seriousness, it's a real brand here). If we're bored we just add "Ba" before our words. Ex: "Ba Elly go ba get me the ba machete ba dammit." Like pig latin...only less so...
